Highlands Centennial Celebration
Announcing the Highlands Centennial Project to all Highlands residents, former residents and interested citizens.
It’s time to celebrate our neighborhood’s founding and its lasting impact with a variety of events and projects planned for the next several years. Read on to see how you can help and what to expect as we mark 100+ years!
Have you ever wondered how much your plot of land sold for when the Highlands neighborhood was created from family farms?
How about between $3 and $6 per lot!
It’s crazy how much has changed in the approximately 125 years since the White Plains Argus newspaper ran that ad trying to sell vacant lots.
But think about what hasn’t changed. The Highlands remains a vibrant and welcoming community that is home to hundreds of families, many of whom have stayed for generations. We’re a thriving neighborhood who goes for family walks, says hi to our neighbors, enjoys a block party and is home to dozens of locally owned businesses. The Highlands is our home and it’s time to celebrate our friends, neighbors and history!
The Highlands neighborhood was planned in the 1890s as “Grandview, a Residence Park.” By the turn of the century, many of the roads were in place and houses started popping up, particularly along Greenridge, Grandview and Prospect.
By now renamed the Highlands, the neighborhood grew and “developed in a manner
surprising of late,” according to an article published in 1906, which stated that
investors “saw its possibilities” and have “great improvements planned” for the
land that “is unequalled as a future home.”
With those lofty promises in place, there was a veritable housing boom with
many of the homes we see in the Highlands today originally built in the 1920s,
embracing popular styles such as Tudor and Colonial Revival.
The Highlands as we know it really started to take shape in the 1920s. So that means – Happy Birthday to the Highlands! We’re celebrating 100 years. What better way to mark the occasion than planning some great events and merchandise?!
Your White Plains Highlands Civic Association is currently working to plan events for the next several years to mark this occasion. We welcome your ideas and expertise. We would love to learn from you if you’ve done your own research into your house or the neighborhood as a whole. This community celebration will be so much better with more input from members of our community.
Stay tuned!
